Artist statement
My practice is focused on exploring emotion, mindfulness, intuition, and play. The objects I create hold my emotions from a specific moment released via action. Mirroring the intangible qualities of emotion by using chance I “destroy” the vessels I make, capturing the event in print and vessel alike. A constant loop of taking and releasing control. I exaggerate the properties of the clay, the raw unglazed surfaces, the fluidity, the cracked and broken, and the imprints left by my hands. The natural qualities and reaction of the material reflect the humanness of emotion. Creating the vessels is an act of mindfulness, grounding my emotions by focusing only on meticulously crafting. Destroying the vessels offers a space for play, to release control. This process-focused practice is healing for me. I am interested in using making and “destroying” as a form of connection. Using creativity as a tool to connect rather than to create physical things. To centre the experience and emotion. Using objects made or otherwise to form relationships between the object/s and events to forge a deeper sense of connection to myself, others and the world. This might look like finished or temporary objects as a result of an event or emotion. All of this is echoed in my current work as I explore this connection personally.
